That “unspecified excellence” which lives in the thoughts of those pursuing it, has simply ceased to be functional.

I suspect that real educational excellence lives in the details of the lives who have invested themselves in it. They increasingly are the line-judges of that success, and it’s the task of the college to understand an individual’s capacities and dreams and to grow them together.

That specification of excellence leads the college to serve, not be served – as the enabler of excellence, not its arbiter. - Dave Wieneke
