"Someone once declared: excellence is in the details. Amen."
from: Norman R. Smith, From Bottom to Top Tier in a Decade: The Wagner College Turnaround Years (New York, Bloomington: iUniverse, 2010), p. 119.
While Bill Readings' book, The University in Ruins, critiques our fascination with an unspecified excellence, perhaps the term still matters. And, as Smith makes clear -- how we get there! Though, of course, the term "tier" in the title implies that rankings matter -- and that may be a matter for debate. (For more on Wagner College, click here.)
