Last Saturday looked to be a bust. No parties, several papers to write, Netflix was down for
maintenance, so my chances for procrastination looked slim. Until my friend came by the room and informed me that IIT was hosting a comedian in the Hub (a place in Hermann Hall, right next to Einstein's) that night.
Now, I had never heard of Mike Birbiglia, most of the stand-up comedy I watch is Robin Williams, Eddie Izzard and Eddie Murphy from the 90's. I was very pleasantly surprised. Birbiglia puts on a good show, even to a small college crowd with sketchy lighting on the stage. There were only four Shimer students in the crowd, but we sat amidst the IIT students laughing at all the same jokes and thoroughly enjoying his good-natured ribbing about IIT and the campus.
IIT often offers events like this, although not so large scale and famous as Mike Birbiglia, and it's great to be able to take part and join in with them. It's times like when I'm laughing at Birbiglia's sleep gymnastics next to a computer engineering major that I'm truly glad that being a Shimer student in the dorms basically makes me a student of two campuses.
