Steve Zolno ’71, President of the Alumni Association, on Shimer’s present and future.
Leading the alumni board is always both fun and challenging. It gives me the opportunity to sit down with people from across generations of Shimerians and support our alma mater. In late April, we had the chance to get together after graduation where we distributed mugs to graduating seniors and listened avidly to student talks that will be remembered as we remember those given at our own graduations.
What about the work of the Alumni Board? As you know, there are a few things that we are enthusiastic about accomplishing – most crucially, helping with Admissions. Jonathan Goldman, David James, Lou Linden and I from the alumni board, together with colleagues like Maria Sosa, have been working alongside Adam Asher, Dean of Enrollment Management, to get to college fairs and accomplish much much more. You know that Shimer is wonderful, so I hope you are continuing to recommend students apply (who will, then, be eligible for our alumni referral scholarship).
You may know that we have also tested a Shimer on the road event as well, when David Shiner joined potential students in San Francisco for a reading, dinner, and a baseball game. Yes, Shimerian discussion – with baseball!
In addition, as alumi, it is important that we be there for students and recent graduates. Hence, our mentorship program. Shimerians can and must reach across generations to help all of us navigate the 21st century!
In all of these efforts – including our commitment to fundraising – the Alumni Board is focused on connecting the Shimer we experienced – whether in Mount Carroll, Waukegan or Chicago – with today’s Shimer and the Shimer of tomorrow. So, during our meeting, after listening to voices, including my own, of trustees who had recently visited North Central College, we unanimously, as a board, passed the following motion:
Resolved that the Shimer Alumni Board express its unanimous support for the negotiations presently underway by the Board of Trustees with North Central College regarding the future of Shimer College.
In making and passing this motion, we know that Shimer is co-created by current faculty and students with alumni and friends of Shimer. We look forward to continuing to Shimer together. We need your time, your talent, and your treasure and I hope like me, you will confidently contribute to the making our future bright.
